Join us to learn about the artist and his artwork, some of which is displayed in our library gallery by Arlington Arts visiting artist Amos Paul Kennedy Jr., and what his work has to do with Arlington's Civil Rights History.

Proceed and Be Bold! is a documentary examining the life of letterpress operator Amos Kennedy Jr., who uses his chosen trade to make provocative statements regarding race, social equality, and more. He is an enigma of a man who does not want to be called one, although he is an artist. Kennedy, an African-American, left a high-paying corporate job and a steady marriage to find his true calling and happiness, which he found in letterpress operating. A very outspoken man, Kennedy likes to stir-up controversy and to get people thinking. This is an intimate look at a very unique personality, viewed through the eyes of his family, friends, and colleagues. The documentary also looks at this obscure art form and how Kennedy and others are trying to make artwork more accessible to the poor and the middle class instead of just the rich. Kennedy's idea of repackaging past statements and making them relevant again is at the core of this piece, which features some of his work and philosophy on life. Racially charged, controversial at times, and intriguing look at a man doing what he loves and changing long-held beliefs and ideals simultaneously.
