Do you know how to work for local and national change so that your views are heard in Congress and the General Assembly in Richmond?

This event is for middle and high school students. Parental accompaniment/participation is recommended but not required.

In 2020, America will commemorate the centennial of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which ensured that women had the right to vote. The hard-fought quest for ratification of the 19th Amendment was a long and arduous journey. Even after 100 years, significant challenges remain that must be overcome in order to attain full equality and to protect our civil and voting rights.

The work of the suffragists continues on to the present. This interactive workshop will give youth leaders information and insight about past and ongoing issue advocacy, and engage them in a hands-on activity that will highlight the skills needed to represent themselves and others at the state and federal levels.

Presenters will include: Kati Hornung (VAratifyERA), L. Sookyung Oh (NAKASEC), and Lucinda Robb (National Archives Foundation).

Topics will include:

  • The outcomes of key state races determined on Election Day (November 5, 2019)
  • Brief histories of the civil, immigrant, and women’s rights movements, including key leaders, strategies, and challenges
  • Advocacy strategies and tactics used to build these movements now and in the past
  • Current issues being raised in the General Assembly and Congress, such as Equal Rights Amendment ratification, pay equity, and deferred action for childhood arrivals.
  • How to encourage youth leaders to protect and advance civil rights through issue advocacy
  • How to make movements more inclusive
