Exploring the Barriers to Equity and Inclusion

Presented in Conjunction with the 2018 Arlington Reads Speaker Series

Arlington's Community Progress Network, a coalition of more than 30 nonprofit organizations, government agency leaders, educators and elected officials, will present a panel discussion and facilitated community dialogue.

The program will explore the local realities of the poverty and housing themes that are so vividly portrayed in "Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity," "The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America," and "Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City."

Experts in the areas of low income and affordable housing, social safety net services, education and healthcare in Arlington will orient attendees in local data, and offer perspectives on how our community is addressing issues through a lens of equity inclusion. Participants will hear first-person resident stories, and take part in a thoughtful discussion on how our community is addressing the complex and critical needs present in Arlington.

The 2018 Arlington Reads series features an investigative journalist, a Princeton sociologist turned urban ethnographer and a leading authority on housing policy — each telling stories of people’s hopes, dreams and losses in the imminent face of eviction, segregation and inhumane living conditions.
