Sister Rosetta Tharpe: The Trailblazing Gospel 'Godmother' of Rock and Roll

Celebrate Women's History Month with a talk about Sister Rosetta Tharpe, an American musician and early pioneer of pop gospel, whose work influenced early rock and roll musicians including Little Richard, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley.
We will be joined by Gayle Wald, a Professor of American Studies and English at George Washington University. Her 2007 biography, Shout, Sister, Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, was a New York Times Editor's Choice book and was the basis for the PBS documentary Godmother of Rock and the new musical, Shout, Sister, Shout!.
