The Spirit of Resistance in Nazi Death Camps

Join Andrea Pitzer, author of "One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps," for a talk about the detainees who found astounding ways—often at great cost—to defy the Nazis.

From Dachau's first days in 1933 to the horrors of Auschwitz, Nazi concentration camps unleashed unfathomable atrocities. Though many prisoners did not have the means or opportunity to fight back, resistance did take place, including escape attempts, assassination of guards, and the use of arson or dynamite against camp facilities.

Andrea Pitzer is the author of "The Secret History of Vladimir Nabokov." Her writing has appeared in USA Today, Slate, Lapham's Quarterly, and McSweeney's, among other publications. In 2009, she founded Nieman Storyboard, the narrative nonfiction site of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University. She lives in Falls Church, Virginia.
