Living History: Historical Military Camp Cooking

Join the library and Arlington Historical Society to learn about a pivotal figure in the history of Civil War cooking.

Captain James M. Sanderson, a Federal officer from New York, wrote the groundbreaking cookbook, "Campfires and Camp Cooking: Culinary Hints for the Soldier," to help educate newly minted "Cook Majors" and to improve the quality of food provided to soldiers. Learn about the outsized impact he had on the quality and safety of food prepared in military camps (including Arlington) and on the battlefield, and try some Civil War-era recipes.

Presenter: Peter Vaselopoulos is President of the Arlington Historical Society and a Civil War reenactor.
