Map it Out: An Introduction to Redistricting

Learn how redistricting shapes the balance of political power
Who draws the lines often decides who wins elections; learn how redistricting shapes the balance of political power. This workshop empowers citizens with free tools and practical knowledge to advocate for fair, transparent redistricting processes, particularly during ongoing mid-decade redistricting efforts. Topics include:
- the history of gerrymandering
- redistricting processes across states
- and the current redistricting landscape in Virginia.
Participants will also gain hands-on experience using Dave’s Redistricting App to create and evaluate legislative maps.
About the Presenter: Michael Skros is an award-winning mapper and redistricting advocate from Pennsylvania. During the 2021–2022 redistricting cycle, he won four statewide mapping competitions, producing Congressional, State Senate, and State House maps that demonstrated what fair, representative maps can look like.
