The Spruce Quartet
Join us for an afternoon of music!
The Spruce Quartet will be performing two string quartets from very different composers, Beethoven and Shostakovich, but both interpret Russian themes and music. First, Dmitri Shostakovich's 8th String Quartet (1960), one of the most popular string quartets for good reason. This gut-wrenching work was dedicated "to the victims of fascism and war”, and reflects Shostakovich's experience under an oppressive regime in the Soviet Union. Second, the quartet will perform Ludwig van Beethoven's 8th String Quartet (1808). This work is the second of three "Razumovsky" quartets, which Beethoven wrote under a commission by the Russian ambassador in Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky.

About the Musicians:
Eugene Kim, violin, is a native of Washington DC and serves as concertmaster of the DC Concert Orchestra. When he isn't managing technology projects for UNCF, he enjoys teaching violin, playing chamber music, and performing with local rock bands Rock Creek Kings and Misil Stereo. He lives in Alexandria with his cat Penelope.
Kay Nakazawa is a violinist from Asheville, North Carolina. Inspired by her older sister, she began playing the violin as a child, studying at the Music Institute of Chicago and later spending her summers at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. Kay was a member of the Yale Symphony Orchestra and holds a Master’s in Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is currently a researcher at Georgetown by day, and a chamber musician and violin teacher by night.
Nicholas Bobbs is semi-professional violist based in Arlington, VA. Originally from Cleveland, OH, Nicholas has been in over a dozen ensembles including the Symphony New Hampshire and is currently in the DC Chamber Orchestra and the Washington Metro Gamer Symphony Orchestra. Nicholas works as an environmental engineer for the EPA, and also plays piano and guitar.
Emily Cornett is a freelance cellist and social worker for Capital Area Immigrants’ Rights Coalition in Washington, D.C. She has performed in ensembles including the Anchorage Symphony and the 12-cello rock band Low Strung. Emily holds a B.A. in American Studies and Psychology from Yale University and a Master’s in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.
