Civil Defense in Arlington: War, Water, and Wounded

Learn about Arlington civilians' role in protecting our county!
For more than a century, civilians in Arlington County have volunteered to protect and serve their family and neighbors in active wartime as well as Cold War, or by responding to flood, fire, disaster, health emergency, or evacuation. Retired Smithsonian researcher and longtime Arlington resident Roger A. Mola will examine some of the efforts and organizations comprising civil defense within Arlington and in greater Washington.
About the presenter: Roger A. Mola is retired from Smithsonian/Air & Space Magazine, where he served as researcher and video editor. Roger moved to Arlington in 1983 after earning his B.S. at Cornell University. In addition to more than 1,000 published articles spanning history, aviation, technology and business, he has lectured at museums, libraries, and for professional and community organizations including Arlington Historical Society. Roger has also served as instructor for Arlington Community Learning and the USDA Graduate School. Mr. Mola is a private pilot with training in a dozen types of aircraft. In 2002, he was honored as Aerospace Journalist of the Year for his breaking news coverage of the groundings of the national airspace system following the attacks of September 2001, and for comparing them to the previous groundings in the 1960s during the largest national and civil-defense drill ever held: Operation Skyshield.
