Learn from the experts how to plant and improve your garden!

Wednesday night garden talks are presented by the Arlington Friends of Urban Agriculture (FOUA's) Plot Against Hunger Program and the Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia. All talks are held on the patio next to the FOUA demonstration garden, unless otherwise indicated. In the event of inclement weather, the Garden Talks will move to an indoor meeting room.

  • Jul. 17: Heat Response to Plants
    • It's getting hot in here! How are we and our plants adapting to a warming climate? 
  • Jul. 31: Plants to 'Dye' For
    • Learn about the fibers people grew in our area for clothing and everyday use. Explore local plants you can use to dye your own fabric in this fun garden talk.
  • Aug. 21 (postponed from Aug. 14): Ocean-Friendly Gardens with DC Surfrider Foundation
    • Create sustainable landscaping and gardening in your home, no matter how large or small the green space. Learn about keeping our oceans and waterways clean and get to know the Surfrider Foundation.
  • Aug. 28: Seed Balls
    • Get down and dirty with this fun interactive activity! We’ll use clay from local Arlington soil along with native seeds to create a neat way to plant flowers around your yard.

Fall Dates and Topics:

  • Sept. 11: Fall Foraging 
    • There are good things to eat all around you. Learn to identify and prepare safe edibles found in our wild (and not so wild) areas.
  • Sept. 25: Good Bugs, Bad Bugs
    • Know the difference! They’re part of the pattern of nature and growing fresh produce. Learn to encourage good bugs and help them combat the bad guys.
