An Encore Learning Presentation

Instructor Jack Royer will provide a brief introduction to a 2004 film with actor Sam Waterston re-enacting President Abraham Lincoln’s Feb. 27, 1860 speech at Cooper Union’s great hall in New York City. Lincoln wasn’t yet a nominee for presidency; so, what made his oratory so famous? How much have political divisions changed and why was the cost of political compromise important 158 years ago? How different are things today?

From the speech: "No man has the right to mislead others, who have less access to history, and less leisure to study it...Thus substituting falsehood and deception for truthful evidence and fair argument."
