Exploring World War 1 in Film

"War Horse"

Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets; British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter.

The program begins at 6 p.m. with an introduction to the film by Edwin Fountain. Mr. Fountain is general counsel of the American Battle Monuments Commission, the federal agency (based in Arlington) that maintains U.S. military cemeteries and memorials around the world. Edwin is also Vice Chair of the U.S. World War I Centennial Commission, and is heading up the establishment of a national World War I memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington.
