In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit...

Has there ever been better opening line?  Probably, but the real point is not how good it is, but what it started!

Join the Silver Spring Lord of the Rings Meetup Group in celebration of the wonderful words and worlds created by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the written word in general, by reading, writing, or just listening and enjoying others' efforts at those two activities!

Specifically, we will be starting first by listening to recordings of JRR and Christopher Tolkien reading songs, poems, and short excerpts from The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil, and The Silmarillion.

Following this short period of listening (maybe 10-15 minutes at most), we will open up the floor for attendees to read their favorite passages, recite their favorite poems, or sing their favorite songs, and if they want to do so in character, so much the better, though of course that is not required.  In addition, folks are free to perform their own pieces written in the style of, or just inspired by, J.R.R. Tolkien.

No Tolkien expertise required. We are happy to have writers, poets, song-writers, the occasional Bard, full-fledged Middle-earth scholars, RPG enthusiasts, LOTR movie fans, casual Tolkien readers, kids of all ages, and people who are just curious.

All we ask is that presenters keep their selections or pieces to no more than two minutes or so in length so that as many people as possible can have the chance to go if they want!
