Montgomery C. Meigs - American Engineer, Architect and Civil War General

Washington Post journalist Robert O'Harrow, Jr. will speak about his new book, "The Quartermaster: Montgomery C. Meigs, Lincoln's General, Master Builder of the Union Army."

Get to know this major military figure that Lincoln, his Cabinet and Generals called "the key to victory" and learn how he fed, clothed, and armed the Union Army using his ingenuity and devotion. As a young man, Meigs designed the Washington aqueducts in a city where people were dying from contaminated water. He built the spectacular wings and the massive dome of the brand new US Capitol. And after being introduced to President Lincoln by Secretary of State William Seward, Meigs became Lincoln’s Quartermaster, and helped lead the union army through the Civil War.

Robert O’Harrow Jr. is a reporter with the investigative unit of The Washington Post who has focused on privacy, national security, federal contracting and the financial world. In two decades at The Post, he has won multiple journalism awards.
